Chapter 1 — The Call Everyone Heard
The phone rang so loud it cut through the entire warehouse.
Not normal loud.
The kind of loud that makes people stop and look.
Ethan Cole froze with a dented blender box in his hands as his screen lit up:
Unknown Number.
He should’ve ignored it.
Instead, he answered.
“Mr. Cole, this is your final notice regarding your outstanding balance of $27,412.”
Too clear.
Too public.
A forklift slowed. Someone nearby laughed.
The box slipped from his hands and exploded across the concrete.
“I’m at work,” Ethan muttered.
“We’ve tried contacting you multiple times. If payment is not arranged today, your account may move forward for further action.”
His jaw tightened. “You added charges.”
“Third-party processing.”
“And an address verification fee?”
“Yes.”
Ethan stepped outside into the cold air. “What address?”
A pause.
Small—but wrong.
“Our system shows a new address linked to your account.”
His grip tightened around the phone. “I never changed my address.”
“The charge has already been applied.”
“Then remove it.”
“I’m not authorized to make that adjustment.”
Click.
The line went dead.
Ethan stood there, staring at his phone.
He understood late fees.
He understood debt.
But this—
This wasn’t normal.
He opened the account summary again.
$27,412.
And below it:
Address Verification — Added 3 weeks ago.
Three weeks.
That’s when everything started going wrong.
The job pressure.
The bank rejection.
Claire acting distant.
He stared at the screen.
Someone hadn’t just tracked his debt.
Someone had touched it.
And if they could change his account—
What else had they already changed?
Because suddenly, this didn’t feel like bad luck.
It felt like timing.
And someone had started the clock before he even knew he was in the game.
